Spiffing Up

Every once in a while it is nice to spiff-up in small ways around the house. I should have thought to take before pictures but oh well. Our kitchen table is 10 feet long and at least 20 years old. Long ago the girls spilled nail polish remover (of course) on the table and not wanting to strip and refinish I just bought some plether yardage and covered the table. Every year or so we put on a new cover. It works great for us. My daughter Chelsey has been visiting and she offered to put a new face on the table last week. I like how the sun is streaming in the windows on the table in this shot.
I have an old old vintage cutting table in my sewing room that had a oil cloth top. And so while she was at it I asked her to redo my cutting table, too. Here is the after shot. The before top was sliced from over zealous rotary cutting.
This is the work in progress shot. You can see the discards from the kitchen table and the cutting table on the floor. And now it is all done and I'm ready to go. Thanks Chelsey. It really is nice to have new covers on the tables.I love slippers. And even in the summertime I like to putter around in slippers but most slippers are too hot for August. I found these cotton waffle cloth slippers in a drug store for under $5.00. But they were plain and the Velcro kept coming open so I decided to spiff them up, too.I fussy cut hexagons from my Sugar Flower fabric. And I made some machine sewing tacking so the flap wouldn't come open anymore. I used gray thread so you could see the stitching. It was a trick to machine tack.I folded the edges under and pressed the hexagons. I pinned them in place sort of in the middle of the slipper over the Velcro flap. And then I hand stitched in place. They are so much cuter now. Perfect for around the house on a hot summer day.

What great updates you've made. I love change and like to be able to redo things (especially when it doesn't cost too much). The slippers turned out really cute too!

Cute slippers! And I like how your daughter recovered the tables. I've used that on my kitchen table like a heavy cloth but never thought to tack it down. Great idea!

Love your vintage cutting table, especially the color. I'm sure it would have lots of stories to tell. (wink)

I wear something on my feet year round too; not much of a barefoot kind of gal I guess. Amazing how a little ingenuity can transform even the most mundane things into real beauties!

How lovely that your daughter offered to recover your tables. Mine wouldn't think of doing something that required work. Your slippers are cute, you come up with the best ideas.

I am a big fan of repurposed things and ways on making older things new again! This was just great for this reason.

The slippers are awesome and what a great idea, but I am not surprised that you came up with it!!! I am a slipper and flip flop kinda girl all year long.

Love what you did to the slippers, now I am going hunting for a similar pair, grin. I love wearing them around the house but never thought about sewing them closed, and the fussy cut flower just adds that right touch.

Nanette: You never cease to amaze me. You're always full of great ideas and then implement them almost immediately. I'm impressed. My husband did the same thing with super glue on our brand new dining room table and then tried to remove the glue with nail polish remover! Arghhh! I guess, we'll have to try and cover that mess up the way you did. :) Buy em books, & buy em books and all they do is chew on the covers! Husbands and children are not that different! Hugs and thanks for sharing
