What have I been doing?

Not that you care or want to know . . .
But this is what I have been doing. Even though I have a wedding quilt to finish and a long list of things to do, these peaches aren't going to wait for me and aren't going to cut and dry themselves.
When the Red Haven peaches are really ripe and somewhat bruising I'd rather dry them than bottle them. The Red Havens are super sweet anyway and they make are the perfect blend of sweet and tart when dried. They are really like candy. I have a good fruit dryer and I can dry them in less than 24 hours. I freeze them until we use them in lunches or for snacks. I wish you could taste them.
Last night Jamie helped me and we made peach pie together. This is why I don't make pies. They taste good but they look so messy. Maybe it is BECAUSE I don't make pie much that my pies tend to fail. I hate making crust (please don't send me recipes, I've tried them all and I even took a crust class in the past) and I don't like the texture of most cooked pies, really. So with peaches, fresh peach pie is my favorite way to go. Even though it looks yukky the pie tastes really good. If you want a good looking pie go see Calli. I used her recipe but look at her results instead of mine. Calli has a great blog. She just lives across town from me and can do anything. Her mom Leslie is a quilt designer and an awesome lady. I have been working on the Lone Star quilt and I have done some hand work in between peaching. The embroidery is all that needs to be done in the above block. I think I like walking the doggie better than the umbrella for Sunbonnet Sue so I will be making more of these blocks. Again, a little rubber arm, oh well. I just wish my arms looked half that good!

jealous of the peaches
the dried ones would be so good in my granola! I saw Calli's pie and so want to make it, I'm not a pie maker either. Love Sue's dress...again! don't pick that arm out!

Oh, those peaches look delicious!! How do you dry them? That would be a wonderful way to have some fruit with flavour in the winter!

As Long as it tastes good and your quilt block looks pretty darn good to me.

We must be related. I think I have something in the oil of my skin, that when touched to a pie crust seems to make it fall apart. I too have taken classes and tried every recipe. It's one of those things I've just had to let go of, and buy a frozen Marie Calendar crust at the grocery store.
I'm ready to jump through this post and eat the peaches.

Mmmmm, what a yummy post you've done this time Nanette!! I don't think it matters what the pie looks like, as long as it tastes good - and with all that cream, yours looks delish ;o).
I like the doggy with the Sunbonnet Sues too :o).
Hugs,
Joy :o)

Gee, can I pop over for some pie? A good, but messy, homemade pie beats a blah, but perfect looking, store bought pie any day!

Warm peach pie is my favorite. I heart pie! I think it's the taste that matters not the look. I'm not familiar with Red Haven peaches. How yummy they must be dried.

Reminds me of those candy peach slices you can buy at vintage places...yumminess.

My pies are ugly too...ug-ga-lee.

So, I just make cobblers and crumbles...I think those recipes were devised by ugly pie makers.

LOVE the little Sunbonnet Sue...and yes, I want arms like THOSE!

You've been busy Nanette! And who cares what the pie looks like -- as long as it tastes great, that's all that matters!

Hi Nanette, thanks for your sweet comments. Believe me, I've made my share of bad looking pies... Perfection is overrated! The taste is all that matters.

I always love popping over to your blog. Cheers, Calli

A lot of ramdom thoughts on your post. 1st- most of us care what you are doing, that's why we read your blog, you're our friend even if we've never met. 2nd- totally agree about the pies, isn't that why crisps and cobblers were invented? 3rd- only you see rubber arms, you hand work is beautiful. Good luck with the rest of the peaches.

Not a recipe, Nanette, but do try Pillsbury Ready-Bake pie crusts from the dairy section - no one will ever know you didn't make it from scratch!
Cheers!

Yummy peach pie! I don't usually make pie (or eat pie) because I don't like the crust. I'm happy to eat out the middle, however.

I love the doggie (and the rest of the block) - so cute!
