Fabric Friday - Be Ware of Cotton Price Rise

I hate thinking about cost. Don't you? Unfortunately it is a part of life. I don't want to ruin your Fabric Friday but.... something is happening. The rise of cotton prices, which means the rise in quilt fabric cost.
Here is a chart for the value/price of cotton in the past couple years. Wow! Look at that rise. Don't we wish that was our bank accounts and investments, yep. Yesterday I was dropping off a quilt and I overheard a lady that works at Elaine's Quilt Shop in the Salt Lake City area saying that the retail price of quilt fabric will be over $11.00/yard as new fabric comes out this year. Can you believe that?
We will be all using more of our stash. Aren't we so incredibly glad we have it (ha). But really we will have to all be aware of the rising prices and figure out how to cope. So now that I've been Debbie Downer, on to pretty beautiful fabrics.
I love vintage and I love fabric. So what can be better than this novelty vintage patterns fabric.
Those little girls mixed with buttons and fabric/notions are so cute. They speak of happy times and cheaper prices.
I love sewing notions, love vintage and love fabric - this piece has it all. You know I never had a store bought dress until I was in college. This fabric is my childhood.
This piece is a bark cloth repo of a vintage piece. I had a little bit of this in vintage form that I have used and fussy cut so when I saw the reproduction I needed a bit for my kitchen fabric collection.
One way I figure on coping with rising fabric prices is to reduce the size of fabric I purchase. Fat quarters are my friends. However, with huge scale prints like this it doesn't really work since the design just gets cut off.
But with smaller scale like this one above, I can get away with fat quarters when I absolutely have to have a specific print.

Have a good weekend. I have so much to do outside my sewing room but I still hope to get in a bit of stitching.

love those vintage prints reminds me of the old days when I used to go to the fabric store in our little town in Oregon and pick out the pattern and then walk around the bolts of fabric touching and feeling and trying to decide on which print to get,I wish I had kept some of those scraps .xoxo theodora

I love your stash! I'm coming to play with you. teehee!

I read recently that the price of cotton had jumped 80%. Wowzer! I think we may be making more scrappy quilts from our stash. Definitely not a bad thing. :-)

We are already paying more than that here in Canada..because most fabric producers are US by the time it's shipped, etc. the cost to charge here ranges from 1l.99 to 18.99. Sad but true:(

Three Birds Inspired said...

Just wondering what you are currently paying for yardage out there? I am pretty sure we run about $2 less a yard in Lancaster County. I may need to send you "care" packages!!

Well hello Miss Debbie Downer...lol
Yes...I've been aware of the pricing for quite sometime...and it is a downer.
But I doubt it will stop the true quilter in all of us who love to create with such beautiful fabrics...and there are so many wonderful fabrics out there to create from!
I agree with Karin...we can just be even more creative...sometimes necessity is the mother of invention and this is a perfect opportunity for us to become inventive in our quilty skills.
I love love love your fabric that you showed today...but you already know that cuz you're my BFF:)

I've also heard some say that cotton prices might go down, just like gas prices have fluxuated.
It's all about supply and demand, etc.
Meanwhile, working within our stash is a good idea!

I had heard not that long ago that the quilting industry already took it's rise! And that now clothing would go up. I sure hope I'm right; nevertheless, I'll be shopping more sales.

Sparky said...

well my dear, you don't want to hear about our prices here in Canada...almost $25-27 a meter..3 inches more than a yard...sew we think US fabrics are a bargain...SEW we do embrace our stash more and more..and from the looks of your lovely finds..you may be doing the same....although I am sure you will possibly not be running out anytime soon lol

Wow, fabric prices are going up just the gas prices! Good thing I have a huge stash. Enjoy the weekend.

Nanette,
OK...those fabrics with the children and the button and the patterns are all gone now and your stash???? That one would have made wonderful a curtain in my craft room! But, fabric is something I have to stay away from....I just love to "have" it, you know????? :):) Sandy

I was just looking at some fabric today and I loved it and then I saw it was over 10.00 a yard. Maybe small cuts mixed in with stash, sale items and more trips to Joanns.

The vintage fabric is lovely, but not so easy to find. Loved seeing them all!

I knew there was a reason for having built up a stash. I haven't seen a big rise here in Australia yet but I dread to see the prices when yours goes up. Currently $22-$24 seems average for us. You have some real beauties there, I love the vintage sewing fabrics, there's a lot you can do with those.

Makes me happier than ever to have lots of fabric in reserve! Love the vintage children. Most everyone used to make clothes for themselves and their children. Now, it's so much easier to just buy it ready-made. But quilting - ah, that's another story, isn't it!

2 weekends ago I went fabric shopping. The fabric I normally pay $9.99 a yard for, was $11.49-$12.49 a yard. My tummy did a little flip flop.

I do get a bit of sticker shock when I'm at the local quilt shop. I really want to support the local B&M stores, because there are soooo few of them left, but the sale prices at Fabric.com are hard to pass up.

Love, love , love the vintage pattern/pink gingham fabric!!!

Oh, and thank you for the very nice mention last week. I'm so glad you like your fabrics. :-)

I'm really glad you posted this. I read it when it was first up but didn't comment because I was…. well you know how it is. But anyway, I did turn around quick like and do some further research on this. I appreciate you sharing this because I think it made me put the price of fabric all into perspective. Personally, I'm not going to panic. We'll adjust. Continue to support your Local Quilt Shop.

A few months ago I was ready to start a mad de-stash. Until I heard that news. Now I am holding on to most of it. :)

nanette--
where can I get me some of the cute McCalls pattern fabric???

I already know about the ridiculous cost of cotton-- as a fabric designer it worries me that people just won't pay the money for good cloth anymore.

I mentioned this on my blog this past week. I'm thinking if you don't have much of a stash, to stock up now before the new material comes in. Here we are paying $20.00 a metre already!! Love your fun material.

Sue said...

EEk! I hate to think what that will do to fabric prices here in Australia. Fabric from a quilt shop is mostly $24 a metre already. I'm glad I have a stash! Which makes me think it is time to start adding to it.

I've just discover your blog and I fall in love!
Price will be increasing because each yer there are less cotton producers.
I live in Barcelona and prices here are terribly expensive. If I want to buy american fabrics, the prices are between 24-26$ here. So I use to buy online.
The first three fabrics included on this post are really beautiful. Would you mind letting me know name and designer, please?

Retrogirl said...

Nanette, I've heard rumblings of price increases but haven't seen sharp increases locally.

Some shops up in Michigan (northeast of us) will raise it to $12/yd by the end of the month!

Mini blocks & scrap quilts are about to become even more popular.
