Trunk Show

Ok girls here is my post about the trunk show I did this week at Utah Valley Quilt Guild. Let me start off by saying the women couldn't have been sweeter or kinder. They were a lovely bunch of gals and all my nerves were for no reason. But seeing them all sitting there waiting made me just so nervous. I didn't know very many of them but I should have known quilters are the kindest people. So there was really no reason for my anxiety. I took my daughter Jamie with me to man the camera and haul my loot and my dear friends Flora and Laura were my quilt holders and folders. I couldn't have done it without all 3 of them. Thanks girls. Some of these quilts are repeats of quilts I've shown on my blog before but you can fast forward through them if you like.

I'm all ready, there is my 3 page handout, free patterns and my vintage charm squares I passed around and let the quilters pick a couple to take as a favor. In no particular order - because I have no idea what the order is now - I'm showing my quilts and talking about vintage, reproduction and Japanese repro fabrics.

There I am, camera shy Nanette peeking out from behind this feedsack quilt. Flora is on the left and Laura on the right (in pink) and you can see them in various poses throughout the pictures, I'm sure they are thrilled to have bits and pieces of them on my blog. Not! This is a quilt that Natalie has dubsed from the Egg Money Quilts book by Eleanor Burns . All the fabrics are vintage feed sacks - no repros. I love the turquoise fabric and I think it adds to the vintage flavor of the quilt.
I call this quilt 'Dishes on the Cupboard Shelf' and it was based loosely on a pattern in a quilt magazine several years ago. I changed it up some, of course and I adore this bright orange vintage kitchen fabric in the border.

This is another quilt with either all feedsacks or plain fabric in vintage colors, most of which I think I got from Glenna years ago. Its hard to tell but there are appliqued cups and saucers, teapots and flowers. This quilt really needed plain fabric sashing instead of this print, but I learned from this what looks best. I love it anyway. The best part of this quilt is that my daughter Shelbie hand quilted it. So its very special. Eek thats a bad picture. I'll have to show the detail another day.

I've shown this on my blog before but its an apple quilt from Quilting with my Sister - Barbara and Teri. A fabulous book that I've made several quilts from. You can't see in this picture but it has vintage apple fabric around the border from a 70's print.

These 2 are quilts I've shown on my blog, too. These were made a few years ago when our local quilt group had a stash challenge. And as Flora told the class - I won. I'm pretty competitive. I try to put vintage fabric in every stash quilt just because I love them so much and it adds character to a quilt, I think.

This is another repeat for my regular readers. But the border fabric was a quilt group challenge too, last year. Most of the ladies in our group passed on it. So I won yet again. (Just an FYI - I'm not winning this years challenge. Its the 'Omygosh' quilt and I passed. But I'll get them next year!)

This is the baby sized dress quilt. This is not the pattern I will be coming out with, but my pattern will be my own dress quilt and should be done by the end of the summer.

Me peeking again over one of my fan quilts. It has vintage and reproduction fabric in the fans and fussy cut corners. And yes this time I used lots of white so your eye can appreciate each individual fan.

Another feedsack quilt. All the fans are made from real feedsack pieces that I appliqued while our family took a trip across the US in 2004. Not the best picture.

Ok, yes I know this picture is sideways but I put the quilt facing the right direction and not the room. I know it makes Laura look like she walks on walls but I couldn't put the picture up with the quilt in the wrong direction. This is a vintage border fabric with umbrellas that I searched months for. I got it at Sharon's Rick Rack fabric located near where I grew up in Pennsylvania. It was pricey but I didn't need much.

Another all feedsack quilt. The border is a vintage print. I love the red and yellow, of course. This quilt is really very heavy. I forget what batting is inside but the feedsacks are more weighty than today's fabric.
This is my Freda's Hive quilt named for the blog. There is a little bee my quilter Wren put in every little black door to the hives. She also quilted words like honey and bees in the sashing. Its a darling quilt that I dreamed about during the night and had to get up and sketch before I forgot it.
I showed my little flag quilts (you've seen all those before). This is a quilt like those made from 2 1/2" squares put together to make a little picture. Its a yellow and blue scrappy teapot. I like the scalloped border on the top and bottom. It looks cute hung on the wall.
This is a kitchen quilt that I made for Laura and she has it hanging in her kitchen. I think I made 6-7 of them. I have 2 and some were commissioned and sold. Its extremely scrappy but I like it. It is a 20th century fabric quilt meaning all of them 1990s or before, so its a mix. I love the zig zags. Its from an idea in a book by Mary Mashuta that I talked about before.
This is another shot of Grandma's Dishes. The border is just my favorite. This is a fabric that is screaming to be remade for use today. I guess I should go to Spoonflower and remake it, well that is if I understood how to do that.
I ended by showing my new quilt "In the Leafy Treetops". Wren, my machine quilter, rushed it through to be ready for the quilt show. It's not bound yet but I think it turned out darling. You can't see the detail in this picture but I am very excited to finish the pattern and get it ready to put out there. It is a very easy quilt. But more about it another day.
I didn't get pictures of everything like my flags and my bags and some of my pictures didn't turn out great but this is the bulk of the trunk show. If any of you are interested in my handout, email me and I'll email it back to you.
It was fun and like Pam always says its great to meet the quilters. I met some very lovely women. I also had a very special guest that came and I wish I had gotten a picture of her in front of my quilts. But I am sure I'll see her again while she is in town. Joanna from Applique Today is visiting her sweet MIL Carmen in a neighboring town and she and Carmen made a special effort to come and see my trunk show. Thanks Joanna! It was great meeting you. Joanna is a very darling girl and I know Carmen from her quilting reputation and Wren Woodland machine quilts for both of us.
It was a fun day, but whew! -nanette

I'm so glad you got it back in time for the show. And I was so happy that the umbrella quilt picture clicked big too, because I really wanted to see that vintage border. I am going to have to go through them all again and "blow up" each one to see the details, but your sense of "scrappy" is fabulous and makes me believe that there IS hope for scrap quilts.

Thanks.

Nanette, I am so glad it went well, but I knew it would. And how cute are you? The cutest I say! I am like the rest, so hard to pick a fave. I think I have one then you show the next one! Those birds did turn out wonderful though. And I'm thinking I could start out with the baby dress one with my left over DJ fabrics. Speaking of, I think you and I need to do a seperate DJ challenge to help motivate us!
So glad you met Joanna, such a wonderful lady! I hope you can meet up again and put out an extra cupcake and pretend I am there. I will send you a picture you can set on my seat!
Love Stacy
