Inaugural Ball

In honor of the Inaugural Balls taking place tonight I thought I'd post my Ball Gown feed sack. And also my ball gown quilt I made several years ago.

When I first saw this feed sack fabric I thought "Nancy Reagan" but after a while I realized it was probably the Queen of England? I think the fabric has to be older than when Nancy Reagan was first lady. Does anyone know when this feed sack was made and what it was made to commemorate? Glenna do you know? Or is it simply a lady in a ball gown and crown? It can't be Miss America can it?
Whatever it is I really like it. I especially like the blue stripes going into the white in a scalloped edge. And the blue stripe itself is very nice. I am sure when the time comes I will use every inch of this feed sack. It is unusual and fun. Don't you just love it? Edit - The concensus of those who "know" including Glenna and Sandi say that this is fabric commemorating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in the '50s. I think that makes it pretty special fabric! And 'Posh and Trendy' pointed out it is very Jackie Kennedyesque, as well. This was actually one of my first applique quilts and you can tell, eek don't look too closely. I guess it is okay because I've made progress. I do really love this ball gown quilt. I can't remember for sure but I think the purple fabric above is vintage.

The funnest part was picking out fabric and deciding what to use. The pattern is from a quilt by Teri Christopherson in the book she made with her sister Barbara, called "Quilting with my Sister".

This dress in the green and turquoise is definately from vintage fabric. I sure wish I had more of that fabric. Dress quilts are my favorite. Obviously.

Happy Presidential Inauguration Day.

My first thought when I saw the feedsack fabric was Jackie Kennedy?
I do love your ball gown quilt.. I'm really into pictures of clothing on dress forms. I've got several pictures that I did like that in counted cross stitch that is supposed to be hung on my sewing room wall but I've changed rooms and their still stacked in the corner... I must get off my butt and hang them again.

Hmmm, your post reminded me of some shadow-quilted ladies I did years ago from an old embroidery transfer that my mother gave me. Perhaps I'll have to take a photo and post it. :-) The ball gown fabric is lovely and makes me think early 1950's, perhaps inspired by the crowning of the young Queen Elizabeth? Love that ball gown quilt you made. I have little dresses I cut out several years ago that still wait to be appliqued!! Always so many fun projects to do and not enough time so I start one and a new one comes along and oh! I start another one. Really trying to focus on the finish part of things this year!!

Hi Nanette--

My guess is Queen Elizabeth. Probably to honor her crowing. Whatever it is, it's wonderful!

Thanks so much for your visits to my sewing room! I had to laugh at your cat burglar comment!

Have you looked at the portable design walls by Cheryl? I bought one for the motor home. Haven't used it yet, but it seems like it will work fine.

Have a wonderful day---

Very Cute Nanette! You've been SO busy too. Isn't it funny how we can't just zero out our google reader? I'm in catch up mode now too -- I was at over 800 and now I'm down to 650 -- still much work ahead, but I'm chipping away and enjoying it!

I don't want appear stupid but as a non-american what is a feed sack?
It sounds like it's something to keep animal feed in but the fabric looks too lovely for it to to be for that.

Oh Nanette... that fabric is so cool! I too thought it looked like Nancy Reagan! I love that it might be QE... and if it is... you should applique a little purse for her!

I image googled QE's 1953 coronation, and she does appear to be wearing a blue dress. It actually looks like AQUA to me!
