Whew . . . hex quilt flimsy done!

Another stash quilt - done. Yayy. Its really a happy faux vintage looking quilt. As I said, it was really fun putting the fabrics together, sewing the wedges but then not quite as much fun sewing it together.

I have to say I did get a little bored with it by the time I got to stitching the rows together. Its ALOT of seams in one quilt. And a lot of seams to match. But I took a break and put it away (I was trying to get it done by last Saturday) for a day or so and then got it back out. After that it was better and I enjoyed putting the last 7 rows together. Though not perfectly matched, I am happy with most of my seams.

My friend Flora made this quilt and warned me about the hexes not laying quite flat. And she was right - they don't all lay perfectly flat. I am totally sure it will be fine once it is quilted. Now how to have it quilted? I'm thinking of what to tell the machine quilter. What do you think?

Part of my problem I think was over cutting and over sewing wedges and half hexes. I've probably got enough for at least a table runner or baby quilt. I'm not sure how that happened. That darn math got me again. These go in a project bag for a bit though. I'm not ready to decide what to do with the leftovers yet.

But its done! And I like it. Even though it was fairly easy, all things considered after finishing it I rate it at at mid range experienced rather than beginner. -nanette

Nanette, I love how this turned out. It's wonderful. I think this is a bit out of my league right now, but I'm putting a sketch in my inspiration book. This is definitely on my to do list.

The quilt is soooo cute! I think it looks vintage, not faux vintage. :) Looks like TOO many seams for me to tackle though. Maybe someday.

Nice, Nanette! When you were putting the rows together, were the hexagons still in half sewn side by side then you had to match them up???

I love it. It looks so happy! Now I want to make one.

I really like how it turned out. I did a hex quilt from the Me and My Sister book that I really loved, and this quilt inspires me to get it out and get it quilted! Nice work. I love your fabric choices as usual.

Turned out very nicely. I really like the pattern and fabric combo. They are a perfect pair. Will you leave the borders with the hexagon edge. That would be a neat finish for sure.

Nanette,
I really like this quilt and have loads of fabrics that I could put to use in the quilt. I think I'll add it to my project list for a time when I can focus on the many seams you mentioned.
Received the flag pattern today. See me smile :-)

Excellent job. I love how honest you were with the whole process. I will definately think twice before starting it. :) I'm thinking big all over cinnamon buns quilting........with 100% cotton batting, of course, for that vintage-y shrink.

I love, love, love this one! Perfect choice of fabric - it's very cute. :-)

Nanette - Turned out SO good! You're right about a lot of seams, but just imagine if you had to cut out each piece with a template, instead of doing the strip piecing method for each section. YIKES!

Amazing range of prints and colors--love it. Love to see it after its quilted.

Wow Nanette! This is fabulous! What an awesome use of scraps. I can't quite tell at which point the center hex gets fitted in..the strips do make sense to me tho. Can't wait to see what you come up with next. :-)

OHMYGOSH, OHMYGOSH, OHMYGOSH! I love how yours turned out Nanette! It is simply gorgeous!

You know... because of you I had to go and attempt one too. I tell you, Sandy Klop is a genius! I'm almost done with my rows, and I did 3) 1.5'' strips. And mine's just a table topper. But I want to make another one and have it look just like yours - I'm all gaga over it Nanette! I did use my Darlene Zimmerman triangle ruler (the purple one) and loved it.

Was thinking too... how to quilt it. I'm thinking in the ditch or echo so the blocks really pop!

Thank you for the inspiration, Nanette!!!

Congratulations, Nanette ! This is such a joyful quilt, anyone would definitely feel happy, while cuddling under ! :)
Your work is the perfect example of how the fabric choice is important : I've seen the same pattern, using Thimbleberries fabrics and it's sooooo much different ! I think some patterns really "match" particular fabrics, and you are so clever at it !

Quilting suggestions, hmmmm.... You could "break" all those angles with curves, maybe a circle in each hexagon, or waves. However, the more I see it, the more I think it deserves "in the ditch" quilting (and I mean EACH one! LOL) , so that each hex' would pop up beautifully ;)

Hugs & smiles to you !

(almost back to normal, after all that kitchen mess :) I'm now going to cut lots of birdies pieces, to take with me in Spain for our summer vacations.

Too cute, Nanette! Way to stick with it!

i LOVE it! It is so joyful and sings summer! I'm one seam away from being totally over matchy-matchy! It's not fun when I sit at the machine and fret over whether this could be categorised as perfect enough! And so many antique quilts that I fall utterly in love with have umpteen missing points! So here's for beautiful sewing (not perfect!) - hip! hip! hooray!

That's beautiful! Your seams look perfect to me!
I love the fabrics you've used. So cheery.

Yep all those triangles do it everytime...Love the 60 and 45 degree designs but with all that bias it's bound to have "flat" issues! LOL
AS Wren tells me sometimes...it will quilt out!

oh, this is so pretty! I can imagine wrestling with all those seams, though.

What a fun quilt - I can see where there would be lots of seams in that one. Really cute.

Wow Nanette, it's amazing! I may have to try my hand at one of these since the pattern looks pretty straightforward and repetitive? Or am I just quilt stupid?

This looks fabulous! I'm working on one, too. But I have a lot more to go. This is very inspiring. I'm glad I know in advance that it probably won't lay flat. Do let us know how you ended up quilting it.

Oh I love how this quilt turned out! You did a wonderful job on it, Nanette!

It looks great! I like the pattern a lot, but I don't know if I'm up for that many seams in a quilt, like you said! But I just imagined doing one almost all white with just the center hexes (or 2nd hexes) being in color... once I get an idea I might not be able to let it die.
