Hex Bag and Swap

It is pretty silly to start a new project when I have a long list of other things I need work on. I never had ADD as a kid or adult until I started making quilts as a passion. Now it seems I have a hard time concentrating on some projects. I've always been a finisher, and though and I don't plan on changing, it does seem I am less focused on that goal sometimes.

That said, last weekend I started a new bag. And it is finished! But I suppose after this I'm back to my list. I thought it would be fun to make a hexagon bag since I've seen several hex bags in my Japanese patchwork books. Here is the front.
Here is the back. I quilted around the hexagons 1/4" from the seam line. I am a scrap lover so I picked out oranges and turquoise from my stash. Some of the fabrics are small feed sack pieces.
I had some thin leather straps that have been calling my name for some time. I'm not sure the fastening is very sturdy though so I won't be carrying bowling balls around in this bag.
I made the sides and bottom in accent colors. Orange and turquoise have been fun colors I've been enjoying lately.
So I told you I about the fabric I got at the Quilting Cottage on Saturday. The lining and accent fabrics are the oranges I picked out to go with this bag. I finished the tulip top off with a bias binding. I really enjoyed making it but it was kind of labor intensive and not for the faint of heart. I think I'm afraid to really use it. I don't want to muss up the loveliness. I may just hang it and enjoy looking at it.
Here are some of the things I sent to my swap partner, Lorraine. I changed my mind so many times on what to make and what to send. I think if you have been in a swap know that feeling. I wanted to make something I would have fun with but she would enjoy, too.
At least one item had to be hand made. I made this table topper with a teapot theme. It was fun to pick out the fabric and put this mini quilt together.
I had Michele at Calico Daisy machine embroider the teapot in the middle. She does great work. The table topper turned out vintage teapotish.

Alert! Go see Dawn's finished "All Dressed Up" quilt and Susan's started one. They are so cute.

OOOOO Nanette, I love your Hexie bag!! I just began a Grandmother's flower garden quilt. Hexagons were calling my name and I have always wanted to try English paper piecing. So I purchased the die set from AccuQuilt and voila fabric hexies and paper hexies in no time at all. I am enjoying having a hand work project. Love to sit at night time with hubby and do this. But I never thought to put them in a bag, what genius! I just love it! I think I would do the same thing, look at it for a while first then use.

I have admired your blog for a long time, but this is my first time commenting. I just love this hexagon bag. The fabrics are beautiful. I belong to the Great Hexagon Quiltalong blog and love seeing new things to do with hexies. I have a hexagon tutorial on my blog for paper piecing...I was wondering if you paper pieced this or did you machine sew it? Thanks for the inspiration!

I LOVE the purse. I am obsessed with hexagons lately. I can't get enough. I've made several GFG blocks and yesterday I bought some inklingo hexagons that I could download. I made one flower in about 1/2 hour. I'm in love. Hopefully this momentum will take me through a whole quilt of hexagons.

I love the table topper you sent too. I just love vintage fabric. I am going to be attempting a scalloped border soon and love looking at them as I plan.

Love the bag and love the fabric too! I'm sure your swap partner is "over the moon" with her gifts.

I think a little bit of your fabric choices rubbed off on me yesterday. I really stepped out of my box after visiting a quilt shop in Vermont that I think you'd really love Nanette. Comtemporary fabric choices to the max!

Naturally I had to buy some which I've shown on my blog. So much fun!

Nanette, you never cease to amaze me. I love the hex purse, but I agree I would only take it out for special occasions. Way to pretty to get a smudge on it! That is one dang cute bag! Did you hand-piece the hexagons into one big piece of fabric?!? I just love it - with or without a bowling ball! And lucky you to get such wonderful things from your swap partner - well, I don't know who's luckier, you or the partner you sent that darling topper to! Oh to be you for a day! xo, The Other Nanette

I've never seen a hexagon bag before. Yours is really neat. It does look time intensive. The binding is sharp, but I bet it took a lot of time.

Nannette-
That is one cute bag! It's SOOOO you! I just love making hexagons too and I've made alot of them in my lifetime for different things here and there, I should have made them all in the same size and put them together-
I would have a nice quilt by now:)
The leather handles are way cute and I don't think that you need to worry about them not being sturdy-after all, you only need to carry your iphone, credit card, keys and maybe a hankie!

Hi Nannette. I love this hex bag and am working on an Easter basket for my daughter. Well now it is going to be a hex easter basket. But I am having trouble finding a 4" inch hex template. Did you find your template locally. If so, where? Thanks for your feedback.
