A Quilting Life Book Blog Tour and a chance to win the book

Welcome to day 1 of the blog tour for the book A Quilting Life by Sherri McConnell, published by C&T Publishing.
Sherri at A Quilting Life has been a friend for many years.  I think she's one of the most talented quilters in blogland.  And she's a nice person, too.  Sherri has put together her first book entitled appropriately
A Quilting Life. It is a great book with many ideas and designs to make and create things for your own home.  If you follow the blog tour you have 10 chances to win a copy of Sherri's great book.
At my house, I've tried to live a quilting life myself.  I think one of the things that has helped me live my quilting life is making a place for me to sew, create and display what I make.  My entryway always has the latest creation hung for me to enjoy along with some favorite trinkets.  I was really happy to be able to hang my quilt from Lori's Row By Row project over the weekend.

I think it is so important to carve out a comfortable, well organized space in your home where you can make your projects and live that quilting life.
For me, if my fabric is organized and well displayed, my creativity is able to flow and I am able to relax and enjoy my quilting life.  When things get too disorganized, I waste my time lose my creative spirit.
;
For my birthday I recently spent most the entire day with some of my family helping me reorganize and get back to where I need to be with my fabric and accessories.   It makes me so happy to have a clean room.

The room isn't perfect but it is a comfortable space for me to live my quilting life.  Over the years I've moved my studio from room to room as family needs changed.  But I've always been able to carve a space just for me to enjoy my hobby and live my quilting life.  This room is right off the kitchen so I'm able to stay close to the family and within range of happenings.

Leave a comment here and tell me about your quilting life space to win a chance for a copy of Sherri's book. Then for the next 9 days you can visit the other blogs on the blog book tour.

Schedule for blog tour:

Today is Me, of course
Wed is Sherri of A Quilting Life finishing up her Blog Tour

We just moved back to South Africa, and I lost my sewing space completely. Now I'm trying to make do with what I got. Sadly not a lot of sewing happening at the moment.

Marja said...

I'm lucky enough to have a whole room for crafting and creating. I just recently bought an Ikea Expedit shelf for storing my fabrics as I've seen in so many blogs. I love it!

Finally I have a real space with windows to sew in. It's crowded but it's all mine. It took 40 years but I love it. I have a table, chairs and cabinets, even a bathroom. What more could I want. I can't wait to see this book in the stores.

I do not have a dedicated sewing space--I sew in our bedroom, but I do try to get some sewing time in each day. Sewing in a shared space does have an advantage--since I need to clean up every day, my projects stay fairly organized.

Michele T said...

My quilting space is an area in the basement... it is nothing fancy or glamorous. In the winter I am near the woodstove and in the summer it is a cool spot to chill and create.

Unknown said...

My quilting space is very small and unfortunately for my daughter is shared in her room :/ But we coincide well and it works :)

How I need a little corner of space for my creativity. Love your pictures :-)

thanks for a chance to win Sherri's book. so exciting!
I have the same perspective about a clean room. I don't feel good about a mess in my sewing room. My quilting space is about to change. I am moving my space down stairs to one of the bedrooms. Now I have to figure out the best way to place all my stuff. That is my quilting life right now.

Sharon J. Hughson said...

I am lucky too. I have a sewing studio at the back of our little adult community house. It's 1/2 the width of our house. I have to get rid of a bunch of stuff in order to have more room. Thanks for the encouragement to clear out my space. It makes me happier too.

I am so in love with Sherri's blog. I check it every day to see what new inspirations may come my way. My quilting space is very important to me. It's my 'man cave'; kind of like a DO NOT ENTER zone for the rest of the family. I usually do my reorganizing right after I finish a project, and while I am cleaning up, it gets my mind plugged in for what I want to work on next.

Diane Kelsey said...

How true! All of my fabricsand threads are in clear boxes, but it a real mission to access anything. Thank you for the tip on how to be more creative in our work spaces.

Carol C. said...

I quilt on the dining room table, but have a little corner of the living room where I keep my current projects. I like to be part of the family when I sew. I enjoy your blog! Your quilts are so pretty!

My oldest son recently moved out and while it has been really hard to let him go, I have been able to turn his bedroom into an amazing sanctuary where I have all of my creative tools and fabric neatly displayed. Thanks for showing off your creative space...you offer up so many great ideas for organization and inspiration!

Unknown said...

Your quilting space looks awesome! I have to share my quilting space with our home office and at times it is a bit crowded. Quilters sure have lots of stuff, all wonderful stuff of course and we need lots of space. But I am thankful that I have space to sew and be creative. My husband is so tolerant of my fabric and projects strung all over the place.

Rebecca said...

I am so unorganized I can hardly find stuff. Want to change!!! Am in process of moving so things are here and there. Love the inspiration from the blogs as to how to organize new sewing room. Thanks for a chance at this book!

Lovely Quilting room!! We recently bought a house, so now I have my own quilting room. Although I have to share it with my husband's computer desk, and it isn't big enough to stretch out my big quilts to hand quilt, it is lovely and I enjoy it and am still getting it organized and the way I want it to me. I have to set up my big quilt in the living room.

my quilting space is my dd's old bed room. It is small and cramped but could be better if I wasn't such a slob!!! I need to start cleaning up after myself.
Looks like a great book

I've got big plans for my finished basement. It may not lead to a "quilting life", but it will be a lovely, peaceful space in which to create.

Attic sewing works for me. Love your color coordinated shelves!

My basement is my quilting space. It's not the greatest, but it is all my own, except for my two cats!!

Like yours, my quilting space isn't perfect but it's a functional and happy place. Not only is it full of fabric but also has other things I love like antiques and sewing-related memorabilia.

Thanks for sharing your sewing space with us, Nanette. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour!

Oh dear... It's very clear that I NEED an actual quilting space. I set up on my dining room table and it's NOT a very creative situation ;) Someday..... someday I'll have a good sewing space. I just don't want it to be in a different room, all isolated from the rest of the house.....hmmmmmm. I'll need to think more on that one :) Love your blog-- thank you!!!

Though I am not that good at it, I do love having a neat and tidy space. I love having my own space and would have a terrible time giving it up even if it is small!

Sharrieboberry said...

Seeing nice, organized stacks of fabric is so soothing! And stimulating at the same time. (I think quilters understand that!)

My sewing room is the kitchen table. I fabric in big. plastic tubs, in the corner of the bedroom. And it's stacked about 4 tubs deep. It's a little too disorganized but maybe that'll be remedied this summer!

Jusmom1 said...

When I was forced to retire a year and a half ago because of illness, I turned my old "office" into my new sewing/quilting room. I started with only my sewing table and an older machine. Since then, I have been working toward creating a perfect space for me to be creative...starting with "creating" my room on a tight budget. I just LOVE my Scrappy, Happy Place!

TaraB said...

I have a cozy little corner in a family room for my quilting. Depending on the item I may use the kitchen table.

Lisa said...

I love it , you have fabric like I do! But mine is all in totes here in WV is the dustest place I have ever lived plus I have no sewing space except the kitchen table. I have been raising children for 28 years and my mom lives with us. So it is the bedroom wall and the diningroom table. But I have a quilty life and would love this book! Your place is beautiful and I see why it inspires you! Thanks!

I am not so lucky as you are, I have a small place in my home office, but I have enough place to enjoy and be at night with my hunsband as he works beside me...kids sleeping and we both working with radio on...such a pleasure.
Lots of love from Valencia (Spain) and let me say I LOVE your room!!!

I wanted to buy Sherry's book time ago, and I wrote her because in her website I was not able to buy from Spain...so ebook will be lovely idea.
Kisses from Valencia.

Wow, I could really use some help with reorganizing my quilting room. However my children think I am a hoarder of fabric (what??:)) so I can't ask them for help. But I could do with some reorganizing. Your post has inspired me so I am going in there next and tackle a corner. I would love to win this new book, I LOVE books: And I love your row by row from Lori, maybe I'll start that one next!

I am another quilter who sews in the spare bedroom. It does meanthat i have to tidy up from time to time which is not abad thing.

A couple of months ago I treated myself to an Ikea rack and wire-basket system to hold my fabric stash and that has made finding fabric much easier.

lisa said...

If it's not neat and tidy I lose all inspiration and just don't even want to be there. I only have a little corner of my family room and keeping it organized is difficult but if I want to work on something it has to be ready or I'm not ready.

Sandy D said...

I need to reorganize and clean my sewing space. It can be overwhelming to not know what you have or find what you need when you go to make a quilt.Thank you for sharing.

My sewing space is also an office converted when the children moved out. It is a mess. I need more shelves and to take time to organize. I love the white and brightness in your space. You are about to guilt me into cleaning. ;-)

My Row Along is almost done. I just need to do the last border. I like organized fabric that I can see. I gets my creativity going!

My quilting space doubles as a guest room so I've had to be creative to make it work for everyone. My sewing table doubles as a computer desk and a table for guests. I have a TV for background noise when I'm working - but it also lets my dad stream the news (and escape the kiddos) when my parents visit. The best thing is the modular closet that allows me to store all mupy fabric and double as shelving for our guests clothes. The on,y downside to sharing the space is that when we have guests, I have to pack up and store my sewing. But spending time with family and friends is worth the trade off!

After 22 years I got my own sewing space, my first child moved out!! I love it and I am still organizing it. Thanks for the chance to win.

My quilting life occurs in my basement and having just moved all my things out of the bedroom and into the main basement, I find I feel more cramped now then ever. I am going to have to change things around and find a happy medium. But it is my space and I love it.

We have quilts all over the house, on every bed and couch. We rent, so I don't really have many things on the walls. I am excited that I have recently made a wall hanging that I will hang in my office at work. Thanks for the chance!

NancyL said...

Not sure it will happen, but I'm trying to plan an addition for my quilting room. I currently use 2 small bedrooms for my sewing machine, fabric and longarm, however that makes 1 not useable as bedroom any longer so there isn't enough space when the kids and grandkids come home! Everything gets moved to make room, so it is now very unorganized. Thanks for the giveaway!

I'm lucky enough to have a bedroom in our apartment as a quilting room. It's tiny, but I think I've set it up efficiently. Now I have to hang some of my quilts in the rest of the apartment because I'm running out of room to store them. They shouldn't be hidden away, anyways! Thank you for the giveaway!

Now that all our kids are off on their own, I have a sewing/craft room that I thoroughly enjoy! Just recently I brought my fabric out of totes in the closet and stacked them in a bookcase type shelf. I love not having to dig stuff out anymore when I want to sew!!!! Thanks for sharing your space with us!

Wile I love my quilting life space I don't love the location which is in a room in our finished basement. I was thrilled when my husband made it for me and try to stay content with it but someday hope to move it to a location in the home where I can be closer to the family during the day. For now it's where it has to stay. I love my yellow room with my tall refinished green armoire which holds all my fabrics ...it's so fun! I have aqua and red accents throughout the room to keep it lively and to spark my creativity. I have a sewing table for me and one for my daughter who is 11 and learning to sew on her first bernette sewing machine. I have a separate cutting table with fun little baskets for different sized cut offs I am not using. Your blog is fun to read and your quilts are beautiful! Thank you for the chance to win!

I definitely moves things around to have a quilting life as I only have 1 desk (which I now call my crafting table) which means that in order to use it to cut fabric I have to move my sewing machine, or serger, or other items I'm working on. But I definitely make my space work to me. I have forewarned my husband of my intentions for the next place we love. I just love sewing! Thank you for the giveaway!

I have my own room that I'm always working on. It's my largest WIP! Like you, if it's not organized, I can't create. I have ADD and it becomes overwhelming for me to be in the space if stuff is just everywhere. Thank you for hosting this giveaway

Hi Nanette. Your quilting space is fabulous! When our oldest moved out, we shifted rooms around, allowing for my very own sewing/crafting/quilting room. Near the center of the home, it is perfect to be close to family. Trish xo

I guess I'm your opposite. My motto seems to be out of sight, out of mind and I don't mind creative clutter while I sew. I do always clear it up before I start another project but, while working on something, I want to be able to grab one of the fabrics without going through a stack to find the piece I want. If everyone was the same, though, this would be a pretty boring world!

Anonymous said...

I have a sewing station in my bedroom, and all my current projects are stacked under the drawers in shopping bags (1 project per bag) all my other fabric is sorted by color/theme and kept in the shed outside. Some day I'd love to have everything in one room, but this set-up does force me to focus on what I can see and it's very nice to empty a bag from under the desk then wander outside to pull for the next quilt!!

Corrie said...

Your space looks great. I need the family to help me sort life out. Wonder what they'll think of that! The quilting life is definitely good!

You sound a lot like me! I also have a room off the kitchen now, after using various other locations through the years, and I love it! I also am much more productive if things are organized and accessible, and happier if I have had some time to sew each day...hard this time of year, but am trying! This looks like a great book to spark some creative ideas! Thanks for the giveaway, too.

Great projects!! Thanks for sharing your sewing room. I would love to take the time to get mine really organized. When I see the fabric all nice and organized on the shelves it looks so nice and colorful. Thanks for the chance to win the quilting book.

My quilting space is our extra bedroom that just became "extra" when one of our boys got married 3 years ago. :) I have sewn for over 30 years, since I was a teenager, but just recently have a special place to call my own sewing room. It is still a work in progress as I organize it and figure how to set it up to make it as functional as possible. I purchased 3 yards of white flannel last year and made one whole wall a design wall. Now when I sit at my machine and look up, there across the room is a beautiful display of all the blocks I am currently working on. Ahhh so satisfying. :) Thanks for the give away!! :)

I am fortunate enough to have an entire room for my sewing space. It IS a spare bedroom, so the bed is generally covered with a white sheet and it is my design bed! Works well for me. Thanks for the chance.

Your room is looking lovely. I like that it's next to the kitchen. My space is a bedroom at the far end of the house (the daughter who moved out first). It is a little away, but good to not get distracted!

Jo said...

Love the space you have. I am in the basement which does have some natural light but is still a little dark. I find I have a good tidy up once I finish a project (despite having many others on the go at the same time!). Can't stand too much mess!

Pauline said...

Having a dedicated sewing place is a joy. My last move, after selling my home, gave me the extra money to purchase a portable 10 x 20 building. At first it was a combination guest room and sewing room. Now we've made other arrangements for the guest and all my sewing is out of the house. Wow! the only threads on the floor are the ones that fall off my clothes!

Thanks for the pictures of your organized sewing room! After my 2 kids grew up & left home, I confiscated their 2 bedrooms- across the hall from each other. Unfortunately, right now i don't have an official quilting space. I set up a Costco table in the middle of my living room with my machine and what I'm working on at the moment. It's a little frustrating right now, but I know one day that a room will be devoted just for me.

My quilting space is in the basement and it is not ideal. Right now, it's also a bit of a disaster but there is not much point in getting it perfect because we are moving in a couple of months. I installed a counter light under one of the picture shelves so I can see better. I have a few Ott lamps on the desk as well. My fabric is stored in my closet in either plastic tubs or one of those block containers from Ikea that fit in the bookshelf. I LOVE my set up

Would love to eventually have one room totally designated to sewing. Would love to be able to see all the beautiful fabrics at a glance. Thanks for the suggestions.

Awesome sewing space you have!!! My space is daughter's old bedroom....after she moved to NC...It became The Mom Cave! lol I sew & make cards in there...read & play w/our Grangirlie too. :)

It is a smallish room...but bright....and definitely not as organized as yours! lol

In our first house I used a closet with doors that folded back to sew and store everything in. When I was done sewing I closed the doors and everything was hidden. I have a whole room for my sewing and love having the extra space to spread out and work on projects.

My sewing space is in the process of being organized and my projects tend to migrate around the house. I do most of my sewing at the dining room table. Thanks for the chance at the great book.

My husband converted a screen-in porch to a wonderful area for me.
