Happy Birthday Nanette!!!

Today is our mom (Nanette's) birthday. To celebrate, the two of us (Natalie and Shelbie) decided to post pictures of quilts that our mom has made for us.

Natalie is going to go first in the show and tell about our favorite quilts that our mom made for us.
When any of us graduate from college, my mom makes us a graduation quilt. So far, a grand total of 2 of us have one. My graduation quilt really highlights the aesthetic that I loved at that time. I loved bright colors, and the star shape, so my mom quilted pieced stars into baskets with a star border. Before she took it to get quilted, she asked the family to come up with words that describe me, and had the quilter put these words into the border. It turned out so cute, and is very special to me.

The second quilt is a circle/square quilt that I had my mom make special for me 3 years ago. For weeks and weeks, I picked out my 'favorite' fabrics from my mom's stash - and found a pattern from one of her books. She put it together without any complaining or agonizing over fabric choices. I love having it on my bed now.

Now, I'll let Shelbie tell about her favorite quilt that our mom has made for her.

My (Shelbie) favorite quilt is also my graduation quilt. My mom tried to make this whole quilt about me. She pieced together individual squares that described me/reminded her of me, or described my talents. As with Natalie, she also had my siblings come up with words that described me, but unlike Natalie- she had the words quilted over the actual squares.

Here are some close-ups of some of my favorite squares --click on the picture to the right to enlarge-- my mom told me that the girl on the right reminded her of me , because I used to have tea parties a lot as a child. Something that cracks me up about the quilt is that in the yellow squares on the left, you can see television sets - which as my mom says, were supposed to be microwaves (which were my emphasis in college - note: not microwave ovens).

To us, these quilts represent a kind and generous mother. On who is willing to share her talents with her daughters, friends, and even strangers. We you enjoyed seeing some other quilts that our mom (Nanette) made! Be sure to wish her a happy birthday -

Natalie & Shelbie
