Natalie's Quilts

My oldest daughter Natalie likes applique and is a sometimes quilter. Natalie is funny. When she does something, she really does it.
Natalie and her husband Justin like to camp and like to go to the desert. When they were on vacation in Arizona, a while back, she was struck by the colors and the shapes of cacti. I think she cut out nearly 1000 (not kidding) cactus in all different colors. I believe she has 5 cactus quilts planned, but she could do so many more with all she has cut out. Natalie has her own style and I like that. She likes vintage but modern, too. Above are 2 baby quilts she recently made for friends. (I wish they were for her!)
Monday when we both had time off work, I helped her get these 2 quilts finished. She hand appliqued the cacti and sewed the blocks together. Then I machine quilted them.
I sewed the binding on for her and then she hand stitched it. I think the baby quilts turned out so cool. She wanted straight stitch quilting to enhance the modern feel to the quilt.
I'm really proud she likes to make quilts. I'm glad I could hand down some of the skills my mother taught me.

I love all those colorful cacti. Those quilts have such a great look. I love when your daughters post on here. Especially when Shelbie shows her finished knits.

I think she needs to spend some time with Cactus-Needle!

I think it is wonderful that she shares an interest in quilting with you. Although her style is slightly different, it is uniquely beautiful. Great team work and beautiful quilts.

Oh, I like those quilts! Great twist on the baby quilt, sure to be popular with the bright colors and modern fabrics. My girls both know how to sew but neither of them are, currently. I'm hoping they will catch the bug later!

These are just adorable!! I love the use of such colorful, solid blocks and all those fun fabrics for the each cactus. I think she should make placemats with her cacti, and a table runner, then perhaps a giant quilted tablecloth and a wall-hanging and.......since she has cut out bunches of them, she's ready to go! I bet I have some fabrics that would make a great cactus quilt. So is this going to be a pattern?

I love these quilts. I still remember the one she made for her wedding. Maybe she'll set some cacti aside for her own baby quilt - someday! The straight quilting lines are the perfect finish. Congrats on making the quilts together!

so unique and so lovely! the colours are gorgeous - especially the plain squares. I straightaway thought of the story of the painted desert when I looked at them. What wonderful patience she has shown :-) It is lovely when we can sit down with our girls and share the moment isn't it - such a sweet and close connection.

I remember when she was working on a cactus quilt before she got married. I didn't realize she had so many leftovers, though. What fun quilts for babies...they will love the simple shape and all the great colors!

Neat baby quilts, not the traditional pink and blue. So neat that you are able to work on a project together :)
